How to Program a LiftMaster® Keypad Without the Enter Button

One important security feature of your LiftMaster® garage door opener is the ability to set up a PIN code you can punch into the keypad to open the door. This is useful if you want yourself or family members to be able to access the garage, or your home through the garage, even if they don’t have a garage door remote handy.

Figuring how to set up a LiftMaster keypad with a standard configuration is fairly simple. You should be able to do it by pressing the “Learn” button, waiting for the indicator light to go on, then entering the four-digit PIN of your choice and holding “Enter” until it blinks.

But what if you’ve tried this method, only to find when you are ready for the final step, you can’t find an “Enter” key? Nothing in the LiftMaster garage keypad instructions tells you what to do in this situation. What now?

You’re not losing your mind. Some older LiftMaster models have a keypad without an “Enter” button. This does not mean you cannot add a PIN, though. Here’s how to reprogram a LiftMaster keypad without an “Enter” button.

How to Program a LiftMaster Keypad Without an Enter Button

You will be relieved to know that LiftMaster keypad programming with no “Enter” button requires only a few simple steps:

  1. Unplug the garage door opener.
  2. Remove the faceplate from the keypad console and find the program/operate switch.
  3. Flip the switch from “Operate” to “Program.”
  4. Input your preferred PIN using the keypad.
  5. Flip the switch back to “Operate” and plug it back in.

Hopefully, this will do the trick, and your new PIN will work to open and close the door.

What to Do If This Method Does Not Work

If for some reason this method does not work, you may be dealing with a system that is too old. There may still be a way to reprogram the keypad, but it may require professional help. If you are calling in garage door professionals for your garage door opener, however, it will probably be worth it for them to install a new keypad system. In fact, today’s LiftMaster garage door openers have MyQ® technology — which means you may never need a keypad or even a remote ever again.

MyQ gives you complete control over your garage door with a digital app. Next time you want to open your garage door, you can just press a button on your phone. You don’t even need to be anywhere near your garage if you have a wireless connection.
